Gabion Basket Retaining Wall Turns Steep Slope Into Usable Space

Steep terrain is one of those problems that can make a property feel completely unusable. You've got the views, you've got the land - but none of it is functional when the ground is just dropping away from the structure. That was the situation here. A seriously sloped area right alongside the home that wasn't safe, wasn't practical, and wasn't doing anything for the property.

We went with gabion baskets for this one, and honestly, they were the right call. Gabion walls are heavy-duty wire mesh cages packed with rock, and they're built to handle serious lateral pressure from soil and hillside movement. They're permeable too, which means water moves through instead of building up pressure behind the wall. For a site like this - with grades this steep - that matters a lot.

What we ended up with is a solid, level area running alongside the home. Gravel surface, clean lines, and a wall system that's going to hold up for a long time without a lot of maintenance headaches. The stone-faced section of the wall also adds a finished, polished look that ties into the home's exterior nicely.

The difference between before and after on something like this is hard to overstate. Ground that was basically wasted space is now an actual functional area. And the structure protecting it is built to handle the terrain long-term - not just patch over the problem.
